Aydin; in southwestern Turkey with 140,000 inhabitants (2004) near the Menderes River. It's the capital of Aydin City with 950,000 inhabitants (2004).
Aydin's some modern industry, providing for the Turkish domestic market. The regional agriculture specializes in figs, but olives, strawberries and cotton are other important products.
Aydin's rail and road connections. Izmir's 100 km. northwest, Denizli 120 km. east and Mugla 120 km. south.
The coastal towns of Didim and Kusadasi in particular are tourist resorts. Kusadasi's near to the Menderes Delta national park, while Didim's a temple of Apollo, beaches, and the ancient ruins of Miletos nearby. The city of Aydin contains archeological sites, including the ancient Carian cities of Alinda and Alabanda.
Aydin enjoys a reputation for its mineral springs and spas, reputed to be curing and healing.
